Music to really make you move - the best music from Colombia - the salsa hotspot - bought to you by Salsabroson

Colombia: where the salsa is energetic, passionate and inescapable! I grew up on the Pacific coast and have been dancing since I was a child. Music is everywhere; buses, parties, people getting together on street corners with a box and a pair of maracas.

In Colombia salsa is a big part of people's lives. From an early age I was inventing steps with my friends and helping in my brother's salsa club. Colombians put their heart, soul and body into their dancing but above all it's about having fun. Ultimately salsa is not a series of steps you do in a particular order, it's something organic and to be played around with. You can invent new steps, do the steps you want in the order you want and develop your own unique way of dancing.

Colombia is well known for producing world class salsa bands like Sonora Carruseles, Fruko y Sus Tesos and Grupo Niche with the world famous Feria de Salsa de Cali held in December every year.

WHAT WILL I DO IN MY FIRST CLASS?

After your first class you will come away having learned around 4 basic steps but most of all having been encouraged to feel the music and get your body loosened up and relaxed. It's hard work but you will come away feeling enrgised and ready to learn more. People love the fact that in the classes you feel a sense of achievement from day 1.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR ANY SPECIAL CLOTHES OR SHOES?

The only thing I would say not to wear are trainers. They often grip the floor too much, not allowing you to spin and slide. Some people like to dress up, others wear jeans. Dress as you want but nothing too hot. You will get hot!

CAN I COME ON MY OWN?

Of course. Many people do. Don't feel that because you are on your own you can't come. You will soon make friends and feel part of the group. If you can persuade your partner to come with you even better as it is great to learn with a partner. After all, it's a dance for couples.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE EXPERIENCE?

Generally people who like dancing or have learned another form of dance will pick it up quite quickly, but no experience is necessary. I recommend you buy some salsa CD's to listen to at home to familiarise yourself with the rythmn as much as possible. Your body needs to keep time with the different tempos in different songs.
